Cosmographer This record is just perfect. Suryadi is a master of creating dense atmospheres and drones while never losing sight of rhythmic patterns, so the whole thing feels like a narrative unfolding. I don’t know why that last track is CD bonus only - it sounds like Suryadi is deconstructing the sonic palette of Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love, Senyawa-style, and it’s fucking incredible. Favorite track: CD bonus - Enam (Deng Boyu Remix).

▼WV074: Wukir Suryadi - Menolak Tunduk/Refuse to Submit

Wukir Suryadi, 1/2 of Senyawa, recorded this one-and-done album in his hometown of Salatiga, Tingkir, during the epidemic lockdown. The industrial percussion conveyed through hand-made instruments, with tribal rhythms and numerous effect pedals, outlines this declaration in an apocalyptic era. The heavy pounding in the darkness and the air-raid siren-like melody wanders through the atmosphere. The still lo-fi but very dynamic recording is Wukir's signature feature, the rebellion against oppression soaking in every track and every note.

This ancient and futuristic work goes beyond the music itself, it is a manifesto of disobedience. Wukir has always been true to his vision, from music composition and instrument making to a self-sufficient lifestyle with the local community. Wukir has no-nonsense, he is always in action.

The uncertain situation of the pandemic due to government policies that do not concern to welfare and security for the people makes anyone indignant. Survival is initiated independently and collectively through community solidarity actions, including protests. Ironically, the action was not responded to as an aspiration for the government to improve and instead responded with repression. Wukir's statement of disobey not only to socio-political conditions, but also to all things that limit and restrict freedom of expression.

This attitude is reflected in the composition on this album. It's not as melodic as it used to be. Dark as usual, aggressive, abrasive, transcendental, and definitely tribal. The percussion element is very dominant. This emerged from his new instrument in the form of a wooden box with a line-shaped hole. This ancient-futuristic album marks a tumultuous new cross-dimensional era to affirm our stance, to disobey.
