▼WV054: 錢賡 Qian Geng & Anton Kaun & 王子衡 Wang Ziheng - Krakatoa
"Krakatoa" is an art edition consisting of reflections 1 (artbook), sounds 1 (cassette) and various fragments.
- reflections 1 (228-page artbook) tells the story of 3 artists, about their journey and performance in Germany at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in spring 2020, and the people they encountered.
- sounds 1 (90-minute cassette) is the reflection of the noise they produced.
- fragments (mixed materials) are the traces of the artistic process such as paint, ash, broken vinyl, canvas, plastic foil, and more.
Catharsis through sound, ephemeral rituals and cave painting - Meeting up in early March 2020, calligrapher Qian Geng, video/noise/performance artist Anton Kaun, and avant-garde saxophonist Wang Ziheng braced the unexpected: The worldwide outbreak of the pandemic turned the artists' exploration of sound and painting as performative physical engagement into a long-term project. Enabled by collaboration activist Adam Langer, the artists channeled the group's momentum into a radical blend of impulsivity and inwardness.
An opera in three acts, the art edition "Krakatoa" reflects on a story of genre-bending openness. Starting with the group's first encounter in Hamburg, the book immerses the reader in collages and text fragments. Three full-length sound recordings document the dynamic of the performances ranging from a nuanced exploration in Munich's Halle 6, to an explosive encounter in Ingolstadt's P3, to a tranquil set within the spatial artwork "Everything is flow" at C*space, Berlin. With "Krakatoa" Adam Langer invites you to re-enact an ephemeral ritual at your pleasure.
All editions are strictly limited, and matching numbers.

For Qian Geng (*1991, Jilin), calligraphy is not a literary art in an ivory tower, but a performative use of the body. Re-thinking Pollock and Yves Klein via the lense of graffiti art and HK movies, the artist's hair-dripping brushstrokes open an unexpected access to Chinese classical art.
The life and work of media artist Anton Kaun (*1974, Weilheim) centers on breaking supremacies with noise, video, and performance art. Masterminding visuals for bands like The Notwist, the artist is renowned for his work for clubs and concerts as well as various theater productions.
Improvising in public spaces, tenor saxophonist Wang Ziheng (*1989, Tianjin) is a driving force in Chinese avant-garde music. With the bar 'SOS' the artist created a social sculpture in form of the Beijing underground scene's watering hole.
Bringing art into focus as a communal process and vigorous debate, the action artist Adam Langer (*1992, Munich) enables the formation of collectives by creating institutional loopholes. Questioning conventions with atypical interventions, his practice of commoning is often compared to Ruangrupa's lumbung.
